Clayton Sargood was born and bred into the cattle industry, as was his wife Jackie. He’s been breeding and growing organic cattle all his life. Clayton and Jackie live on their main property, Tulloch Brae. Their two sons, Jake and Harry, are capable riders and help out with operations. The push towards organic production came about when Clayton’s father, Bob Sargood, became seriously ill from the chemicals used to spray cattle. The Sargoods gained organic certification in 1995 and are known as pioneers in this growing industry. All of them agree: it’s the best thing they ever did for their business and for their family.
The Sargoods breed Santa Gertruidis on Manresa, which they cross-breed to achieve well-shaped animals perfect for growing out to around 500 kg in 16-20 months.
The cattle are humanely raised, free-range and grass fed before they are finished with organic corn and grain for 100 days. The animals are never crammed onto feedlots and they are always treated with respect. Production is certified organic and totally natural in every aspect. No hormones or antibiotics are used and there are no pesticides on the pastures.
Clayton’s Organics monitors all processes closely, from raising the beef on their properties to processing and exporting. The business owns a truck and uses it to transport cattle to Tulloch Brae, where the animals are finished on certified organic feed such as corn, sorghum and barley.
We pay attention to quality control at every step of the way and make sure that organic standards are met.
Our family hails from Manresa, a 40,000-acre property of pulled scrub and buffle grass in Western Queensland. Manresa was certified organic in 1995, making us one of the first to be certified. We enjoyed life on Manresa but knew we wanted a blue-ribbon property closer to city markets. We bought Tulloch Brae in 2004 and now have 620 organic certified acres 18 miles from Toowoomba.
We’ve been selling around 4500 organic animals a year since then and moved into the US market in 2011. At first, we were only in a few stores but we’re now distributed in 372 ShopRite outlets between New York and Philadelphia.
The Clayton’s Organic range is very successful in the US and we are keen to expand and build on our knowledge and contacts in this market
