Organic Grazing

What is organic production?

Growing certified organic produce means using a whole systems approach, covering soil, water, plants and animals. It includes growing without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, hormones and antibiotics. Livestock must be certified USDA ORGANIC and fed on organic, non-GM feed.

If you’re already certified, then you know the process is really about good recordkeeping and good land management. It may seem daunting, but many producers are already halfway there.

Here are a few pointers:

  • Australia has several certifying bodies you can choose from.
  • You can employ a consultant to set things up properly from the start.
  • All certified properties need an Organic Management Plan. This is great practice for your business, organic or not.
  • If you just want to try it, you can have the first inspection and see what you reckon.
  • You can command a higher premium.
